About Xavier Grau (Barcelona, 1951) View artist profile >>

Grau’s first pieces stand out for they geometric monochromatism: the artists clearly positioned himself against conceptualism and minimalism and got closer, instead, to the neoexpressionism formal style. He was notably influenced by Willem de Kooning and Philip Guston; hence, he incorporated figurative object with a total absence of narrative. Over the years, his artistic production has evolved towards a lyric abstraction including new elements such as an energetic colour palette, movement and fizzy lighting.

Xavier Grau was a founding member of the artistic group Trama, together with José Manuel Broto, Gonzalo Tena and Carlos León. This society was created during the seventies and organized important exhibitions and they published several magazine issues as well. Nowadays, Grau’s work can be found in several collections such as at the Juan March Foundation; ‘Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barcelona (MACBA)'; the 'Museo de Arte Abstracto Español de Cuenca’; the Contemporary Art Collection at the ‘Fundación "la Caixa” and in the 'Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía'
