About Stephan Balkenhol (Fritzlar, Germany, 1969) View artist profile >>

Stephan Balkenhol is a German sculptor that works with Wawa wood, creating mostly human figures, that sometimes mixes with animals or figures from mythology. His figures are anonymous men and women, normally dressed up and with nautral attitudes. The secret remains in the details, in the position of their hands or inclination of their head sor backs, there is where the communication between the figures and between figure and visitor relies. Balkenhol creates a dream-like atmosphere through his sculptures and its setting, generating a complicity climate for the viewer. As Balkenhol says, “my sculptures do not tell stories. There is something secret in them. I can’t reveal what it is, the viewer has to find it out.”
