At the age of twelve, he began painting as a student of Mario Toral, later he studied at the Miguel Venegas Painting Academy where he met his teacher and mentor: Claudio Bravo. For more than a decade Ricardo lived in Spain, mainly in Madrid and in the coast of Andalucia, in Marbella, during this period he travels continuously to Tangier, Morocco, to the house/workshop of his teacher Claudio Bravo, with whom he generated a great friendship, which remained until the death of Bravo in 2011.

His first solo exhibition was in 1987, at Galería Egam, Madrid, later he joined a select group of artists from the prestigious Marlborough Gallery in New York, exhibiting for the first time in this gallery with other Chilean artists at the end of the nineties. Subsequently, in 2000, he held his first solo exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in New York and from then until now he has exhibited individually on multiple occasions both in Marlborough NY and in Madrid, Monte Carlo and Santiago.

He has integrated more than 40 collective exhibitions in cities such as Miami, Monte Carlo, El Salvador, Paris, Dubai, Buenos Aires, NY, and Santiago and in several international fairs such as FIAC in Paris; Arco in Madrid; Art Miami in Miami; ARTE BA in BSAS; Contemporary Istanbul; Art Dubai, etc. His last solo exhibition at Marlborough Gallery in New York was in 2017 and in Santiago in 2018.
