About Maria Teresa Codina (1926, France) View artist profile >>

He studied Fine Arts in Barcelona and Paris, a city in which he was also interested in studies on civilizations and primitive art. In 1958 he made his first textile works and, in 1960, he installed his house-workshop in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), a city that during that decade was converted, by the hand of the artist Josep Grau-Garriga and the Escola Catalana del Tapís, in the research center and constant innovation of this artistic technique.

Codina's career was framed in the art of the research tapestry. After her training period and her first steps as an informalist painter, she discovered the faculties of some subjects, in particular, the fibers, with which she begins to work, fascinated by the primitive works seen in the Museum of the Man of the capital French The works carried out between 1961 and 1962 conveyed that origin and that magical atmosphere and in them the presence of jute, wool and some metal object and fabric stand out.

Her subsequent collaboration with the architects Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell and David Mackay led her to reflect on architectural and visibility problems. Abandon the pictorial effects that had been granted to the tapestry to date and renounce the plane of the wall, adopting textures in high relief to convert the textile into three-dimensional element, approaching it in this way to sculptural and architectural concepts. It is important to highlight the close relationship that their projects maintain with other areas of creation, from architecture, together with the aforementioned Martorell-Bohigas-Mackay; the cinema, together with the director of the Center de Recherche Cinématographique of the University of Bordeaux, Jean Dupla; music, together with the composer, Josep Maria Mestres Quadreny or poetry, together with Joan Brossa. In 1987, the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the City Council of Sant Cugat del Vallès organized an exhibition of his work.
