Liliana Porter has been based in New York since 1964. Her artistic production nurtures itself through the employment of several mediums such as paintings, photography, installations, drawings, etc. The artist juxtaposes figurines of popular cultural icons, children’s toys, and other kitsch objects in surreal compositions so that unlikely relationships emerge—to unsettling or fantastical effect. Recent solo shows include those at El Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales in Montevideo and Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, among others.
The artist’s work has been exhibited in more than 35 countries in over 450 group shows including those at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, and many others. Nowadays, her work is represented in many public and private collections such as the TATE Modern Collection in London and the Museo Reina Sofía Collection in Madrid.
