About Julião Sarmento (Lisbon, 1948) View artist profile >>

Julião Sarmento has developed a multimedia visual language in which he combines video, film, sound, installations, painting and sculpture. His work centers on the research of interpersonal relationships, going deep in psychological relationships, sensuality and transgression. Having studied visual arts and architecture, his paintings stand out by being thick and textured, on top of which Sarmento draws with graphite, reversing the traditional way of painting, drawings which he after erases fully or partially. Through this process he obtains a layered effect that evokes mystery and disconcert. Julião Sarmento’s work has been shown internationally in many museums and forms part of the collections of the most important museums in the world, such as the Guggenheim NY, the Museum of Modern Art in NY and the Musée National d’Art Moderne Georges Pompidou in Paris, among many others. Sarmento has also represented Portugal in the Venice Biennale in two occasions.
