Plensa is an artist of materials, sensations and ideas. His references include literature, especially poetry, music, religion and thought. He considers himself, above all, a sculptor, although his creative process has included multiple disciplines. His work addresses the very condition of being: its physical and spiritual essence, ontological awareness of present and past, moral codes and dogmas, and our relationship with nature. What we cannot explain is, precisely, what makes us human. Plensa’s objective is not to create objects, but to develop relationships that embrace everyone.
Plensa is highly active in projects in public space; his celebrated works can be seen at Bonaventure Gateway, Montreal, Canada; Millennium Park, Illinois; Olympic Sculpture Park, Washington; Burj Khalifa, United Arab Emirates; BBC Broadcasting Tower and St. Helens, England; Pearson International Airport, Canada; Daikanyama, Toranomon Hills, and Ogijima Japan; Shanghai IFC Mall, China; Albright Knox Art Gallery, New York; Rice University, Texas; Bastion Saint-Jaume, France; Raoul Wallenberg Square, Sweden; Pérez Art Museum Miami, Florida; among many other sites worldwide.
The artist has presented solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions around the globe including the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Wisconsin; Musée Picasso, France; Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England; Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Spain and the Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland.
