About Gary Hume (Tenterden, United Kingdom, 1962) View artist profile >>

British artist whose paintings stand out, notably, by the use of bright colors and by representing risky figures that stand between abstraction and figurative. He explores subjects such as nudes, gardens, animals, daily objects or pop culture images, in a simplified and reductive aesthetic. He has a simple but at the same time complex style, since he refuses an easy interpretation of his works. In his own words, “Art is not about absolute statements, art has its own doubts, questions and ups and downs.”

Hume represented Great Britain in the Venice Biennale of 1999 and maintains two studios, one in Accord, NY and the other one in London, UK. He was also selected for the turner Prize in 1996 and won the Jerwood Painting Prize in 1997.
