Mika Taanila is a Finnish film director and visual artist who works between the traditions of classic documentary film-making, avant-garde and video art.
His work is both shown in cinematic screenings and galleries or museums as film video installations.
All of his work deals with the issues of artificial surroundings and futuristic utopias, combined with the notion of failure and collapse. He worries about the loss of historical memory and the failed human efforts to capture everything. The fragility of analogue technology is also a central subject in his work.
Taanila has participated in international group shows such as the Venice Biennale, the Shanghai Biennale, the Berlin Biennale, Documenta 13 and Manifesta 4. He has also had many solo shows.
In 2015 he received the Ars Fennica award.
