Educated in Fine Arts in the University of the Basque Country, the Bradfort Art College in England and the University of Barcelona, Kepa Garraza (Berango, Vizcaya, 1979) initiated his exhibiting career in 2004, from that moment onwards he started receiving different grants and awards. He has shown his work in art centers such as: Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, CA2M in Madrid, Artium in Vitoria, DA2 in Salamanca, Museo San Telmo in San Sebastián or Fundación BilbaoArte in Bilbao, and also in some artistic spaces from other countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Peru, Chile or Germany. He has been awarded with different prizes and his work is today part of several meaningful art collections both public and private.
Kepa Garraza’s work reflects on the nature of the images we consume on a daily basis. His work calls into question the official speeches and it challenges the process of institutional legitimation. Deeply interested in the construction of the historical narrative, Garraza invites the spectator to question the information obtained from the official media. His reinterpretation of the reality is always ambiguous and confusing, full of subtleness and gray areas that evoke the viewer to rethink the historical narrative and the chronicle of reality. His ironic and acid look offers some alternatives to the reality we know, and he suggests a very healthy exercise: always doubt the official version.
