He is a visual artist and writer, Patiño worked actively on the renewal of Spanish art of the eighties, mainly through the foundation of 'Atlántica', an art movement created with the aim of placing the Galician art in the international scene.
His work is based on an abstraction full of antagonisms and contradictory energies, joining together the power of gesture and symbolism. His painting, described by the American critic Donald Kuspit as "conceptual expressionist", is characterized by the intensity of colours that are strictly committed to memory. He has carried out solo exhibitions all around the world, for instance in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bordeaux, Hamburg, Madrid, New York, Paris, Stockholm or Zurich.
His work forms part of museums and public collections such as Colección de Arte Contemporáneo “La Caixa” (Barcelona, Spain), CGAC Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago de Compostela, Spain), MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain) and MNCARS Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain).
